Man of Hammered Bronze

how many thousand tiny tinsmiths it has taken
hammering away, smoothing spurs and
bending sheets, gentle here,
fearsome at times,
some methodical and others careless,
bringing out the spirit that was within
raw and base material;
how can I thank them all for the progress,
some of them known and others
how can I thank them, but –
to take up a hammer,
to stoop low and toil
in the shaping of a thousand others
