If You Saw A Heart

If you saw a heart hanging in the air
pulsing as your own,
eclipsing the sun and moon and stars,
brought to earth by its heft and volition –
if you saw a heart crushing through the mountains,
toppling the Redwoods and making
abstract rubble from the skyline of Chicago,
if you saw this mass of flesh
cratering the Great Plains and
replacing our grandest lakes with
blood,
if you saw this vicious muscle
destroying all as it returns,
at last,
heaving to your doorstep –
would you believe it to be love?
