The Sum Of All Our Works

How many hours from how many hands,
the thick fingers of sculptors –
programmers plucking keys like spiders spinning –
pianists, steelworkers, scholars, farmhands
how many lifetimes to build a world and
how quickly a world is forgotten
sheet music gone out of print and
brushstrokes forgotten
buildings burnt and bowled,
new bricks laid on old foundations and
cities carved out like stewing hens
how many hours have been plowed under,
how many lives reduced to fertilizer,
glories and terrors buried beneath barns
and still, still, we measure our boards and
plan the next creations.
