Flowers Before

Some flowers bloom
whiter than buried bones,
whiter than the gates of heaven;
some flowers bloom
whiter than a lion’s teeth
and twice as sharp,
blooming like the pop and sizzle and
spurt of life,
blooming where nothing grows but
mushrooms and maggots;
some flowers bloom in the rain and
some flowers bloom on corpses.
